The instructors who teach martial arts in the White Dragon School have many years experience between them and show loyalty not only to their Master, but also to the traditional disciplines they teach. They have all completed rigorous training including additional tuition from external bodies and all are CRB checked, have first aid certification and child protection awareness. SportsCoach UK and Cornwall Sports Partnership have helped us over the years, and our local police force have also contributed. Our members have undertaken sponsored walks, such as the Ten Tors and the Lions Newquay Walk which has helped to fund our equipment purchases for the school.
Rob Denny
Rob has trained since the age of seven, taking a keen interest in all martial arts and he eventually pestered his father to take him along to his classes in Derby and Ilkeston. Class discipline was paramount and children always showed respect to the instructor and other members of the class.
Rob took part in competitions as a cadet and came away with a few trophies. He continued his training, only taking a break whilst at Plymouth and Exeter Universities, and still continues to learn new skills with Alan Hughes in Tae Kwon Do. He particularly enjoys the weapons classes and has a brilliant analytical mind which helps him to teach the applications. He was also shortlisted to the final seven in the 2009 Cornwall Sports Partnership awards for Male Coach of the Year.
Rob graduated from Truro College in 2007 with a PGCE in martial arts. He was assessed on his teaching methods, having been marked by tutors from Truro College in the Truro and Newquay martial arts classes over the two year course. Rob produced assignments, work on martial arts history, and the psychology in teaching, as well as the usual legal requirements, despite being moderately dyslexic. This was a rare opportunity to progress the delivery of learning in martial arts, and is unlikely to be offered again in the future. His certification was passed to BNMAA for their records and skills database. We are fortunate that Rob can pass this knowledge on and put it to good use within the classes to the benefit of everyone in the school.
ASSISTANT INSTRUCTORS
Andy Hobbs & Iain Whitelegge
Andy and Iain assist Bob by instructing the St Austell class at the Rifle and Pistol Club. They are both excellent instructors with many years experience. Both continue their personal training in Newquay, progressing in Lau Gar and Wing Chun and they have produced black sash students to a very high standard.
Nigel Swatton
Nigel joined White Dragon School in its infancy and has remained a loyal and superb instructor. He has natural ability, an analytical mind, strength and power, is an excellent practitioner for demonstrations and a mean fighter. He regularly helps to instruct and increases the difficulty in training methods to 'push' those senior ranking students who wish to take on that little extra to extend their abilities further.
Elaine Denny
Wife of Bob took up martial arts training around the same time as Nigel, initially to keep fit.
Useful instructor especially for children, shy beginners and adults who would rather train with a woman, especially for the combat skills. She believes you are never too old to take up the martial arts, just need to be selective and ensure training is suitable for the student's age and health.
Neil Graham
Instructor at RAF St Mawgan. Neil has trained with Master Jeremy Yau's Lau Gar schools for many years as the RAF has taken him around the country. Having done a stint in Newquay previously, he is back again, recognising and teaching the same way as Bob, in the old school way. A good all round instructor.
Brothers Mike & Kim Worden, Dave Sale & Dave Roberts
These boys have been with White Dragon School since the birth of the Newquay classes and train in Lau Gar, San Shou, Wing Chun and Tai Chi. All have endless patience and help instruct, especially with beginners and intermediates. They learn their skills quickly and have proven ability to pass the knowledge on correctly. All instructors are supervised by chief instructor, Bob Denny 8th degree.
Bob and the White Dragon School are extremely grateful to all instructors and those other students who help to instruct.
Rob Denny after receiving his PGCE award in martial arts at Truro Cathedral.
Rob currently teaches in Wadebridge and Falmouth and occasionally in Newquay.
